America's third largest city, Chicago was first incorporated in 1837. Frequently described as the "Second City" due to its historical position behind New York, it has developed its own unique identity as a commercial and cultural center serving not just the Midwest, but the world as a whole.
Travelers to Chicago can take advantage of ample air connections through both busy O'Hare International Airport and the conveniently located, but primarily domestic, Midway Airport. The city also has excellent rail connections through Amtrak as a legacy of its role as a major railroad center. It is also served by a number of bus lines and by Interstates 55, 57, 65, 80, 90 and 94.
The core of the city is pressed up against the shore of Lake Michigan. While the Gold Coast district to the north is home to the toniest shopping and hotels, the Chicago Loop and Museum Campus areas contain a number of tourist attractions, a range of hotels, and the city's business core. Either area is a desirable place to stay and is convenient to the other area by taxi, bus, or walking.
Chicago truly offers something for everyone. Culture mavens will enjoy Chicago's acoustically excellent Symphony Hall and the Art Institute of Chicago, home to Seurat's La Grand Jettee, as immortalized in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Architecture buffs will enjoy an architectural cruise on the Chicago River highlighting the city's many modernist masterpieces. Shoppers will be blown away by the Miracle Mile, with all of the high end shopping of New York, but with a great deal of Midwestern friendliness. Families will have a great time at the Shedd Aquarium and Navy Pier, and sports buffs have two baseball teams, two football teams, a basketball team, and a hockey team to choose from. Cuisine in Chicago ranges from the unique Chicago hot dog (get it with everything!) to molecular gastronomy at Alinea and Moto, as well.
